Auchencrow Thistle is a small and welcoming cycling club with members in and around Duns in Berwickshire, Scotland. We are a competitive club who believe it is important to include and encourage all our members.
Club nights are Tuesdays from late March until late August. The calendar is a varied one, made of up individual time trials, king of the mountains (KOTM) and road races (APRs). Performances for these different types of racing are recorded in season long leagues found on the Standings page. Weekly race reports can be read in the Berwickshire News or check our News page. The Events page gives details of club events, meeting times and venues.
Often run over sporting courses on heavy and technical roads, Auchencrow Thistle won't deliver you a fast ten time on a dual carriageway. It will challenge you, though, with varied racing across the hilly Lammermuirs to the north and the flatter Merse to the south.
Club runs take place every Sunday, rain or shine, meeting 8am in Duns Square. They usually cover 30-60 miles (50-100km) at around 15mph+ (25kmh+) depending on seasonal conditions, who is riding and when folk need to be back home. Routes are generally agreed on the day. Non-members and even Wheelers (Berwick or Kelso) are welcome to join us. You don't even have to let us know you're coming – just introduce yourself when you arrive.
Faster riders will spend more time riding in the wind, just because they can. They might even try and drop you on a hill or sprint to a 30 sign. They will, however, wait for a regrouping to take place at a sensible point. Someone will notice if you've been dropped and make sure you're not left behind. We'll wait for punctures and mechanicals and someone will lend a hand (unless you've come out on threadbare tyres, in which case you will be lampooned).
Longer rides are scheduled throughout the year for the last Sunday of each month. Check Events or Facebook for route details.
Wednesday nights are for MTBs.
Membership is just £20 a year. If you're interested in the club nights, come along and take part. Non-members can even compete three times without becoming a member. After that you'll need to join up if you want to continue racing with us, according to British Cycling rules and for our insurance purposes. Cyclists must be a minimum 12 years old to compete on the open roads we use.
Auchencrow Thistle was started in Spring 2002 and is fully affiliated to Scottish Cycling. Auchencrow might just be the smallest place to ever have a cycling club named after it.
Simon Porteous Cycles in Kelso kindly offer a 10% discount for members.
